On 26 September 2009 the Désalpe of Charmey took place. Charmey is a small mountain vilage in the canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. The “Désalpe” is one of the most well-known Swiss mountain traditions. After grazing the Alpine meadows during the summer, cows, goats and cheep need to make their way down to the farms in the valleys. This is done in the form of a parade, where the farmers dress up in traditional costumes (called “bredzons” for the males (armaillis) and “dzaquillons” for the ladies). The animals wear colorful flowers and have large bells hanging from their necks.
The Désalpe in Charmey is combined with a artisinal crafts market, traditional music and lots of food and drinks. Very typical are the flag throwing and the alp horns.
These are lovely Johan – much nicer than the one I went to this year.
Thanks Athena. The Charmey Desalpe is quite nice. Locals here say that the best one is in Albeuve!
