New: River Wild, a Swiss National Park landscape

Last weekend I visited the Swiss National Park in Switzerland, near Scuol in the canton of Graubünden. If you ever visit Switzerland and love to hike or bike amid awe-inspiring unspoiled surroundings, make sure to go there! It is a great place for landscape photography as well. The tougher hikes, as usual, bring you to the most beautiful areas … my knees are still hurting as a result.

River Wild, a mountain river flowing down in the Alps

A mountain river flowing down a slope towards a forest and Piz Pisoc in the Swiss Alps, near Scuol in the Swiss National Park of Graubünden.

I had a lot of rain and overcast skies during my stay there. However, I did manage to bring home a couple of nice photographs. The photograph to the right is one of them. It is titled “River Wild”, and I just added it to our Swiss Landscape Photography portfolio.

It shows the downward flow of an alpine mountain river with Piz Pisoc in the background. Piz Pisoc is a mountain in the Sesvenna Range of the Alps. I will revisit the Swiss National Park in a couple of weeks and will publish a new series of landscape photographs from the park in September!

A Nikon D3x and a Nikkor 24mm f/1.4 lens captured this photograph. A 3-stop neutral density filter pushed the exposure time to a few seconds. This smoothened the flowing water a bit. The light in the back was a bit bright. Therefore, I also used a graduated neutral density filter to balance the exposure. The other settings were: 24mm, ƒ/13 and ISO100.

Cheers, Johan 🙂

Such a wonderful and gripping composition. Makes me really want to go back to Switserland again, this shot :)

LOL! Good for you. I don’t speak any French. I always thought I could understand a little Dutch between English and German…have been to your country a number of times years ago. I bet you like the weather better in die Schweitz? Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

        • Johan Peijnenburg says:

The weather here is certainly a lot different from what I was used to by the sea in The Netherlands. Thanks!

Lovely image. I too would love to have mountains around like these!

ND filters are great. I’ve recently bought a 10 stop filter from B+W and I’m having lots of fun using it.

    • Johan Peijnenburg says:

Gerard, Tnx for the feedback as well. Where are you located? I don’t have a 10 stop yet. Might be an interesting addition to the kit 🙂

      • Gerard Charmley says:

My +10 was the B+W nd110 Mrc (screw on) bought from Amazon UK. They are hard to come by and I looked as far afield as B&H in the US (too expensive when shipping was taken into account).

So I waited for Amazon UK to stock them which was several months for the 77mm version. They are manufactured in Germany.

Lee also do a +10 ‘big stopper’ for their filter system.

Thanks Emilio! In retrospect, I should have tried to show a bit more of the river to lead a eye bit more but I am happy with it anyway 🙂

Looks perfect to me 🙂 I’m not a Pro, but after all not only Pro’s will look at your pictures 🙂 What is important for a picture is to bring pleasure both to you and to people who will look at it 🙂 I don’t like people who take pictures just for the sake of the others to like them and not enjoy them themselvs. Me ? I love the picture 🙂

        • Johan Peijnenburg says:

Thanks Emilio for the feedback! I wouldn’t publish a photo that I don’t like myself … I do however think about how valid my reasons for liking it are and what others might think … and then most of the times publish anyway (which sometimes is scary) 🙂

great shot .. very beautiful .. but how do you manage to get a long shutter speeds without overexposing anything ??

  4. Simon Morris says:

Nice shot Johan – the Swiss Alps is high on my agenda to photograph… I hope to do just that when I visit my family back in the UK – it’s a long way from my new homeland of NZ! 😉

    • Johan Peijnenburg says:

it’s certainly worth the stop on the way to the UK. NZ doesn’t sound bad for photography either …. maybe one day 🙂

      • Simon Morris says:

yes, NZ is stunning – a photographers paradise! My family and I relocated to Canterbury (South Island) in March 2009 and have never looked back! 🙂

    • Johan Peijnenburg says:

You should Mikael! Consider going to this park … it’s gorgeous with loads of great photo opportunities.

I wish I was around, but I am in Florida, USA. Classes start in two weeks, end of vacation at least for more three years.
