Westkapelle is a small seaside town on the North Sea coast in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a great place to photograph minimalist Dutch coastal landscapes in B&W, because of the many interesting subjects you find there. This breakwater is a great example. The North Sea coast near Westkapelle is well-known for these wooden breakwaters. Normally, however, you only see them on sandy beaches to keep the beaches from eroding.
The breakwater in this image is partly submerged. It leads the eye to a mooring post. A longer exposure time smoothened the North Sea water as well as the clouds in the sky. As a result, the photograph has a more soothing and zen look and feel. “At the Sea” seemed to be a fitting title for this minimalist Dutch coastal landscape photograph.
