This photograph of a winter landscape with snow features an old and beautifully shaped oak tree on a meadow in the Swiss countryside. It was a sunny day in December and a lot of snow fell during the night before. The snow was still pristine, and the branches of the oak tree carry a thick layer of it. In addition, the leaves have hoar frost.
This oak tree stands tall in the foothills of the Alps, at an altitude of about 930 metres, near Rothenthurm. Rothenthurm is a village in the canton of Schwyz and home to Switzerland’s largest upland moor. The moor is an important conservation area for plants and animals. It is however also a beautiful location for hiking and landscape photography, especially in winters with lots of snow!
The old oak tree really stood out this sunny winter landscape with snow. The layer of snow on the tree contrasts nicely with the darker bark and branches of the oak tree. Johan opted for a black & white treatment, to make the photograph more soothing and zen.
