The Moiry Glacier is a beautiful glacier situated in the mountains at the end of the Grimentz valley in the Swiss canton of Valais. The glacier is about 5 km (3 miles) long. The view in this photograph is close to the Cabane de Moiry of the Swiss Alpine Club. This hut lies on an altitude of 2825 metres (9268 ft). It is a great place to visit as part of a hike or ski tour. Also, you can spend the night there as well. The area around the hut offers stunning views. Not only on the glacier but the surrounding mountains as well, as can be seen in this photograph of the Moiry Glacier. It takes about 1.5 hours of hiking with an ascent of 500 metres (1640 ft) to get there.
It was a beautiful sunset. Soft light warmed the snow and ice of the Moiry Glacier sideways. As a result, there was a subtle play of shadows and light. Even though the sunset colours were beautiful, a black and white presentation seemed to fit the photograph best. The peak in the back is the summit of a mountain called Les Bouquetins by the way.
This photograph of the Moiry Glacier is part of our Mountains & Hills landscape photography theme. The theme showcases mountain landscape photographs in black & white from around the world. A frozen beauty! Both the glacier and the image.
