This Spanish landscape photograph features the rugged sea stacks of Playa de Gueirúa. Playa de Gueirúa (Gueirúa beach) is a small cove at the North Atlantic Coast near the town of Cudillero in the beautiful North-Spanish region of Asturias.
Playa de Gueirúa is a pebbles beach. Its view on a row of very typical sea stacks, called La Forcada locally, is impressive. The sharp stone islets, consisting of quartz and slate, are relatively steep and high. As a result, they really stand out in this coastal landscape.
This photograph shows a birds-eye perspective on the sea stacks, because it was captured from a small viewpoint above the beach. From there you climb a very long flight of stairs down to the pebbles beach. The water of the North Atlantic Ocean was calm and the sunrise rather cloudy. Dappled light illuminated the rugged sea stacks of Playa de Gueirúa sideways. A shutter speed of eight minutes smoothened the clouds and the ocean water. As a result, the mood is more mellow which contrasts nicely with the ruggedness of sea stacks of Playa de Gueirúa.
Playa de Gueirúa cannot be reached by car. You must park in the small hamlet of Santa Marina and hike to the beach from there. It’ll take you about 20 minutes. Note that hiking to it is easier than hiking back, especially with a backpack full of photography gear.
