This minimalist Dutch landscape features a wooden mooring post at the North Sea coast close to Westkapelle. Westkapelle is a small coastal town on the Walcheren peninsula in the province of Zeeland, in the western part of the Netherlands.
Outside of the summer season, the beaches and dikes near Westkapelle are relatively quiet. As a result, it is a very nice location to shoot minimalist coastal landscapes. The presence of various characteristic photography subjects adds to this. You will find:
- A very large and old wooden pier
- A nice old lighthouse in red and white
- Many wooden breakwaters
- Various other mooring posts
I captured this photograph at low tide on a rather moody November day. The water of the North Sea was surprisingly calm and the clouds above it thick but fast-moving. The mooring post stood out strongly under these conditions, especially because of the band of light at the horizon. A longer shutter time of eight minutes smoothened the clouds and water. It quiets things down a bit further. Eventually, using black & white seemed to fit the over-all mood best.

This portfolio is a work in progress, so make sure to re-visit it once in a while to see new additions. By the way, the photograph titled At the Sea was taken at more or less the same location as this one of the mooring post in Westkapelle.
