Les Diablerets: Culan mountain on a sunny winter day

I captured this winter landscape during a snowshoe hike in the Swiss Alps near Ollon in the Swiss canton of Vaud. As you can see, it was a beautiful sunny winter day! In the background, you see Culan mountain. Culan Mountain has an altitude of 2,789 metres (9,150 ft). The mountain lies in the Bernese Alps and is part of the Diablerets massif. Like most mountains in the Diablerets massif, it has a very characteristic and impressive appearance. I included a snowy meadow and pine trees in the frame to emphasise the beauty of the surroundings I was hiking in.

Culan mountain on a sunny Winter day, with a snow-covered meadow and spruce trees in the foreground, near Ollon in Switzerland.

I captured this mountain landscape with my Nikon D3x and 24-70 f/2.8 lens. The following settings were used: 29mm, ƒ/11, 1/250s and ISO200. No filters were used. I hope you like it!

Cheers, Johan 🙂

    Hi Johann,

    Great image,the 28-70 is super sharp,huge dynamic range between the highlights and shadows, you nailed it.Did you use a ND to bring down the sky?.Well done.

    • Johan Peijnenburg says:

      Thanks again! The 24-70 is indeed very sharp David. I haven’t had it for long, but I am very happy to have it especially when I only want to bring one lens. Didn’t use an ND grad in this case. The sun was behind me and the camera can deal with this dynamic range without a problem. I did apply a gradient filter in pp though.

    Patricia and Benedict: thanks. Always nice to be featured ain’t it 🙂
    Randall and Meg: thanks for the kind words and for stopping by again!

    Since we have an 11 year-old, we can still do silly things like this and get away with it. Except, the dog wants to join. There’s also the fox and geese game that children and silly adults play in the snow.

    That smooth snow is wonderful. It’s just crying out for a snow angel – please tell me you did one after taking the shot?!

  6. Johan Peijnenburg says:

    Thanks Thomas! This was taken very close to Leysin 🙂
    Wilfried: thank you as well! You should get yourself a gps fo your new camera as well!

          They annouced for 16th Feb. I was among the first 20 orders with the shop in Zurich, so it depends on their contingent. I hope they will be served first – at least they are quite big in CH. Hmmm… 😉

          • Johan Peijnenburg says:

            Cool! I saw the prices went towards what you are paying quickly on toppreise by the way … I am going to wait a bit 🙂

          • Wilfried Haferland says:

            yes, I check prices too. Imagine all the poor guys who pre-ordered at other stores for full list price! Let’s wait until the first bunch of these cameras is delivered and sold out. Prices will raise ;-).

          • Wilfried Haferland says:

            Yes, Johan, you are right. Next week will be very interesting, huh? Time will tell, and I don’t buy the camera for gambling on prices only. Just for playing around 😉

          • Johan Peijnenburg says:

            Looking forward to your impressions once you get it Wilfried. We should go shooting together at the end of Feb!

    Johan, this is a very well composed photograph (I didn’t expect anything else in fact). The light hits the mountain’s structure softly, bau hard enough to create these beautiful shadows that I love so much.

    Thank you for the geographical information, much appreciated.

    Thank you, Johan!

    @Joel: thanks! Isn’t snow (and a mountain) on the way over there?
    @Louis Lavoie: merci beaucoup!
    @Sinead: thank you! It is a nice combination. Unfortunately we also have a lot of haze, so it’s not always as crispy as this …
    @Athena: thank you! You should do that trail with your new snow shoes!
    @Radek: thank you as well!

  11. Sinead Sam McKeown says:

    Oh my. What a view! I think the combination of snow and a blue sky has to be one of the best things ever. Wonderful composition. Gorgeous!!
